Can you name three words you associate with human trafficking?

• Black women

• Prostitution

• Foreign backers

What do you think Denmark can do to prevent the development of human trafficking?

Information campaigns in connection with prostitution. Direct action on the streets and in brothels. Harsh penalties for the perpetrators. Possibly deprive the perpetrators of their social benefits, if they receive such, deprive them of residence permits/citizenship and immediate sentencing and serving of sentences. It should NOT be worth it.

And we must send clear political signals to the countries where we know that women typically come from. We must provide assistance so that the women can return safely and possibly give them financial/supportive start-up of, for example, their own business in the country or via voluntary aid organizations. Often, it doesn't take much to give a person a new start in life.

What do you think are the most important challenges surrounding human trafficking in Denmark?

I believe that a long-term, targeted effort is needed. Allocate funds and allocate more personnel and tools for surveillance and investigation, especially in vulnerable areas where it is known that the poor people are typically exploited.

I believe that there are too few police, uniformed as well as civilian, to handle all areas, whether rural or urban. I also believe that in the long run, giving harsh penalties and summary sentences to those caught will send a signal that we in Denmark DO NOT accept human trafficking and that it is NOT worth it.

First of all, border crossings and airways must be better equipped to "spot" smuggled women. The challenge is probably to find the women who are not visible in the vulnerable places, but who are hidden in smaller towns. Efforts must also be made to create a change in attitude among those who buy sex from prostitutes - also in rural areas, where it is probably more common than we think.

Focus and funds must be the solution.
