Can you name three words you associate with human trafficking?

• Exploitation

• Deprivation of liberty

• Abuse

What do you think Denmark can do to prevent the development of human trafficking?

Prostitution in general, like all other goods, is about supply and demand. If Denmark decided to criminalize the purchase of sex, it could hopefully reduce demand. It would also send a nice signal to young girls in the gray area around prostitution that you are not allowed to buy another person's body for sex.

There have already been several awareness campaigns about trafficked women and they must continue to be there. The campaigns must be further developed and adapted to the target group they are intended for. One must continue to believe in the best in people and thereby that awareness and information about the conditions of trafficked women can awaken a sense of empathy and humanity in potential sex clients.

What do you think are the most important challenges surrounding human trafficking in Denmark?

In my opinion, it is very important that we in Denmark criminalize the clients and not the trafficked women. Instead of imprisoning or deporting them for being illegal immigrants, we must see them as victims exposed to human rights violations and take care of them. This could possibly be in the form of education and/or residence permits, so that we ensure better opportunities and conditions for them.

If we follow such a policy towards trafficked women, one can hope that more of them will dare to seek help from shelters and the police.
