Can you name three words you associate with human trafficking?
Slavery
Deprivation of liberty
Violation
What do you think Denmark can do to prevent the development of human trafficking?
The best thing to do is to focus on what it really is - most people imagine that slavery has been abolished, when the truth is that it still happens. Every day. Right in front of us. It is the worst form of deprivation of liberty, as the nightmare is not over when the girls are removed from their families and homes. It has only just begun. After the abduction, a degrading life follows, where all basic human rights are forgotten. If you can get the Danes to realize this - the full extent of it - they will be more willing to make an effort to eliminate the phenomenon.
What do you think are the most important challenges surrounding human trafficking in Denmark?
The main challenges are to eradicate the customer base.
It is a regrettable fact that this type of crime cannot be eliminated through ordinary legal means. The network is simply too large and the business too lucrative. Nor can you appeal to the conscience of unscrupulous individuals who have no conscience. If we are to destroy the business basis of people who regard human life as a commodity, we must hit them where they understand it... on the economy. The moment the commodity cannot be sold, it is no longer good business.
In my opinion, the most important challenge is to convince prostitution clients that, if they do not want to completely boycott prostitution, they should at least refrain from frequenting places where trafficked women work.
