Can you name three words you associate with human trafficking?

  • Involuntary

  • Tragedy

  • Impotence

What do you think Denmark can do to prevent the development of human trafficking?

My experience is that it is a catch 22 for trafficked women in Denmark. When they come into contact with the police, they rarely express their circumstances due to, among other things, intense fear and powerlessness towards the perpetrators. And since there is, for example, no special asylum for trafficked women in Denmark, it is difficult for them to make a real choice that defies their fear and then cooperate with the police, who would then have a greater chance of catching the perpetrators.

It seems that no matter what, they are simply sent home, where they are usually picked up at the airport upon arrival and sent back into the global system of trafficking. Therefore, I think that it requires Denmark, and indeed many other countries, especially European countries, to be more determined in taking joint responsibility for the victims, for example by providing special asylum, so that it makes sense for them to cooperate with the police.

What do you think are the most important challenges surrounding human trafficking in Denmark?

And that's it. In order for the above to be implemented, there is no doubt that it must be prioritized more than it is now. Both in terms of finances and effort. And that is a huge challenge. Because there is a bit of an attitude towards people who are not Danish citizens. They should not expect us to throw money and time in their direction. And therein lies the problem and the lack of responsibility, I believe.

Because it is Denmark's responsibility. Danes are their forced customers. It is supply and demand at its worst. According to Rambøll's latest study, one in seven Danish men would not refuse sex with a trafficked woman. That is simply not acceptable. And we have the responsibility to change that fact.
